Hooray! Wildwing is a finalist for the 2012 Oregon Book Awards! I have fantastic company in the Young Adult category--take a look! And while you're there, consider voting for your favorite for the Reader's Choice Award.
January 28, 2012. I'm teaching at Making It in Tough & Changing Times, a mini writing conference, along with Monica Drake, Jessica Morrell, Christina Katz, and Adam O'Connor Rodriguez. Here's the blurb of my talk: "Paring It Down to the Truth: 'Make every word count.' You hear it all the time, but how do you do it? Whether you tend to write long and then slash, or pithy and then add, you need to cut the dross in that final draft. Paring it down doesn't always mean cutting it short: pacing and rhythm matter. Years of writing educational passages with strict word limits have taught Emily a thing or two about trimming down to the essentials. This workshop will teach you the tricks and tools at your disposal, from the concrete to the conceptual."
July 19-22, 2012. Come join us at the Pacific Northwest Children's Book Conference for writers and illustrators in Portland. Under the talented aegis of Linda Zuckerman, with a faculty that cares about connecting and teaching, this conference is a gem (if I do say so myself). I'll be giving workshops on the secrets characters keep from themselves, and creating a sense of place.
I'm honored to announce that Wildwing is a Bankstreet College Best Children's Book of the Year for 2011! (It's in the 12-14 list, under "Adventure"). "The Committee reviews over 6,000 titles each year for accuracy and literary quality and considers their emotional impact on children. It chooses the best 600 books, both fiction and nonfiction, which it lists with annotations, according to age and category."
May 13-14, 2011. At the SCBWI-Oregon Spring Conference, I'm leading workshops on "Getting to Know Your Characters" and "The Falcon on my Fist: Researching for Fiction Writers." I'm so glad to be teaching at this conference that, in years past, gave me tools and inspiration to write my books! Check out the faculty, including Greenwillow's own Martha Mihalick. Come join us!
June 24-26, 2011. Summer in Words Writing Conference, Cannon Beach, Oregon. The theme is "Truth, Risk & Lies." Whether you're a writer just starting out, a writer in search of answers, or a writer who needs to get more words on the page, you can find inspiration, answers and camaraderie at three days of events, talks and workshops with some of the Northwest's best authors and writing instructors. I'll be talking about "Private Lies" and "Paring it Down to the Truth." And the Oregon Coast is glorious this time of year.
